Uni Shushi is an intimate 12-seater omakase restaurant located at PAC in Jing’an. It’s the latest venture from Sun-San, the sushi master behind highly praised omakase restaurant Ochiyo.

With just six seats at the bar and another six in a private room, it’s cozy, intimate, and designed for sushi appreciation.

Running the show is Wang Yang, a disciple of Sun-San, who himself trained under the legendary Oyama-San, a name that once defined Shanghai’s omakase scene.

The omakase menu, priced at ¥498 or ¥698, is pretty darn good value for what you get, especially in Shanghai. And if you’ve experienced Ochiyo, you already know this is going to be good. Like, really good. Whether you’re popping in for lunch or settling in for dinner (they offer two seatings), Uni Shushi delivers.

Akami Tuna

I went for the ¥698 menu, which features — roughly, depending on availability of ingredients — a warm starter (often a silky chawanmushi), sashimi (raw or torched), a grilled dish or two, a sashimi bowl, tempura, about six pieces of sushi, a couple of warm dishes, maybe a hand roll, and dessert.

And yes, as the name suggests, uni makes an appearance — because what’s an omakase without sea urchin.
